The ligaments are the connecting factor between the bones

Tears in the ligaments are the result of a traumatic event, (an external contact for example) that causes the joint to go out of its normal range. The abnormal movement causes great pressure on the ligaments, (which are not flexible) and eventually rupture.

There are 2 types of tears in the strip.

A partial rupture of the ligament can heal on its own (since there is still some supply of blood) but this process will take time.
A complete rupture cannot heal on its own, and sometimes will require surgery.

Signs of the existence of a rift:

  •  Hemorrhage
  • swelling
  • sensitivity around the joint
  • pain while moving or when pressure is exerted on the spot (weight)
  • joint instability
