The definition of empathy is:
The ability of the individual to understand to some extent the mental state of the others.
There are those who will argue that empathy is not fitting for the world we live in. And whoever has empathy, will be stepped on. And that empathetic person will not be able to progress in his field. This belief belongs to the old world. We live in a new age where collaboration and teamwork will take you much further. As individuals, athletes, business people, and as a society.
A study conducted by Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FMRI) has shown: Psychopaths are unable to experience basic human emotions such as guilt or remorse. They exhibit emotions just to manipulate other people around them. So be careful and think about who you direct your empathy too.
There is a fundamental difference
Between empathy and emotional identification. When we talk about emotional identification we are talking about getting to the same emotional place of the same person we are talking to. That is, literally getting into the prson’s shoes. For example, when you feel sorry for someone, and you put yourself in his place and really understand why he did things the way he did, and you lose your perspective on the thing. Because you only see his world, you show emotional identification. In such a situation it is difficult to give advice to a person, and you only identify with that person. Unlike emotional identification, empathy is understanding the feelings of that person, but not getting into his shoes. That way, you stay in your position, but you understand what the person is going through and feel it. What empathy allows you to do, is not to be in the same state of mind with that person, but to give a person advice from your point of view, and show him new points of view on the same matter.
So why is empathy so important?
Today we are a society where we need each other to move forward and to motivate each other. Try to imagine the following situation: You are going through a difficult period in your life. Your performance is declining during that period. The coach/boss invites you to a conversation and tells you that if it continues like this your ways will have to split up. How does it make you feel? Do you feel motivated? Do you feel a desire to get out of your situation and start working harder? I believe not.
Now imagine the following situation: You are going through exactly the same difficult period, your performance is declining, and the coach/boss is inviting you to a conversation. You enter the room after your performance has gone down. and that person asks you if everything is fine and if you need anything. And that he is here for you for whatever you need. He says he thinks something is wrong because your performance has gone down and usually you are not like that. How would you feel then?
the magic of empathy
This ability of empathy is our magic to create a better society and a more successful personal environment that will go much further. We do not want a society where everyone are feeling lonely and that a person to a person is a wolf, we want to live in a society where everyone is for everyone and people will pick each other up. That is why we believe that empathy is very important for today’s society.
